The pH level of the water in your pond is very important to the fish that reside there. Surface water is generally slightly alkaline, unless there is some outside source coming into the pond. To find out the pH level in your pond, check with your local water department or county cooperative extension service to see if you can send them a sample or get the equipment you need to conduct these tests.

If you find out that the water in your pond is too acidic, you can add agricultural lime to bring it back up to the optimum level for fish, which is 7 or slightly above with 50 parts per million of alkalinity and 50 parts per million hardness.
